wednesday's child #10: notjustalabel

not just a label (http://www.notjustalabel.com/) - what a god send.

we moved to london shortly after njal's launch in two thousand and eight to find that we were living only a stone throw away from its creative abode in the heart of shoreditch.having already joined the website before we left the emerald isle, we were given news on NJALs first online shop and off we went with some handpicked garments to meet with founder stefan siegel.  the original idea was to offer the sale of one-off designer pieces providing a fresh online concept and access to otherwise unobtainable pieces. THE SHOP featured a fraction of the number of designers selling through it now, but we could sense that things would go from strength to strength at that moment and so it has.

THE SHOP has been hosted by leading industry figures worldwide from head buyers to bloggers each consecutive month thereafter and we were happy to have one of our pieces (nude bow top) handpicked by our favourite fashion blogger, susie bubble. http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2009/05/not-just-a-label.html now the world’s leading designer platform for showcasing and nurturing today’s pioneers in contemporary fashion, NJAL receives over sixteen million hits per month. an infinitely expanding destination devoted to facilitating growth in the fashion industry and perfect for the showcase of siob.she.

we are excited to announce after having received what remains of our pre collection back from paris, siob.she shall be online in a matter of weeks, apres a photoshoot with the lovely rachel ciandella (event coordinator/art director/dj/model) and the ever-so-talented lyndsay martin (check out her new facebook page http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Lyndsay-Martin/224515894243991). we will notify you of the selling date very soon...

'inside this envelope are the scraps of my old life' is a collection of seventeen one-off pieces. every piece made with blood sweat and tears, but mostly and more importantly, it has been made with LOVE.

time to buy yourselves abit of siob.she love.

wednesday's child #9 : field day dreams

As Glastonbury Festival 2012 kicks off this week, our minds have been yearning more than ever for hot summer days. Whilst the weather may have been far below par (torrential rain and 100 denier tights anyone?), we've been consoling ourselves with warm thoughts of upcoming festivals. Due to various reasons (no money, too many jobs, lack of organisation), siobshechlo have so far only managed to secure tickets to the one day extravaganza that is Field Day. Held a mere hop, skip and a jump away from siob.she towers, this sexy little London based mini fest promises a veritable earful of musical snacks, from twee indie meanderings to face jolting dubstep. Because we want you to be happy and enjoy life as much as we do, here is our not-to-be missed Field Day guide of must see acts (in alphabetical order no less):

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Lo-fi feelgood weirdness at it's best, if you don't own 2010's masterpiece album 'Before Today' then you must hate your ears, your brain and everyone around you.

Chad Valley - Throbbing summer jams from Oxford's Blessing Force anti-hero, you're guaranteed to get at least 2 songs stuck in your head for the rest of your life. We recommend swampy mixes 'Up & Down' and 'Portuguese Summer'. Do it, do it now.
Electrelane - Cult all-girl menstrualness - 'nuff said.

Glasser - Heralded as a 'weird synth siren' and compared to Enya (gotta love The Guardian), this solo True Panther Sounds act is destined for big, beautiful things thanks to her love of intimate, soulful arrangements. And she made most of her debut album on garageband, dontchaknow.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Nostalgic synthesisers chorusing against visions of chromed modernity and pulp futurism, a one man band who also handily doubles up as a therapist. In a good way, obvs.

Trophy Wife - Wistful, fragile gorgeousness which manages to juxtapose sunshine guitars with thudding disco beats to create yearning melodica for the romantically challenged. Definitely one for the early evening crowd - watch with a bottle of beer in one hand and a loved one in the other.

Warpaint - All girl wooze core straight out of the deserts of California, known for their raucous live shows and excellent collections of vintage denim.

Wild Beasts - 'The Devils Crayon'. That is all.

See you at Field Day!

wednesday's child #8 : shh...it's a secret

the dalston eastern curve garden is a small patch of green space just off busy dalston lane,it's hidden behind boarding and you enter through a little wooden doorway into a peaceful heaven. very tranquil indeed. the garden was created in spring 2010 by architectural practice EXZYT on the site of a disused railway line that had been derelict for over 30 years. most of the furniture has been constructed on site from reclaimed wood and recycled pallets from the nearby ridley road market. bird-boxes, a bug hotel and butterfly nests have all been made to make the garden welcoming to wildlife as well as people.
it's managed by a group of local community organisations and volunteers, one of whom is our lovely friend venessa who invited us along last month - we fell in love with it and are sure you will too.

ps:there's even talks of a siob.she / eastern curve collaboration to give the scarecrows some new frocks...watch this space!

wednesday's child #7 : a houseboat for a day

my afternoon of creating barcode spreadsheets (yes, this is as mind crippling as it sounds)was spiced up last week when i recieved the following picture message from my housemate jack....

view from our window

my immediate response was "have you been playing with google maps/photoshop?" as our jack has rather alot of time on his hands and has a very close relationship to his laptop. however after more pictures and videos it started to sink in that some sort of urban tsunami had hit our street and that jack was trapped inside helping our neighbours rescue their belongings! here's a video of the aftermath - in some places the water marks are up to my shoulders!scary mary.

I rushed home to chaos (and a journo from the hackney gazette waiting on the doorstep), the water had been drained away leaving a think layer of smelly sludge and forty damaged homes, i was speechless. i tried to console our neighbors with beer and (tried extra extra hard) to roll a decent cigarette for them...at least my attempt at this provided a laugh.we were left without gas, electricity and ironically water so we packed our bags and fridge contents and spent the night with friends.
1am
after a very restless night i returned to spend the day talking to men with clipboards and helped our neighbours salvage some clothes and books. thankfully by friday evening we got our electricity and gas back and we were able to wash at last!

on a serious note, my heart goes out to the people who were directly affected by the water, i can't begin to imagine loosing all my belongings - all those little personal things that are irreplaceable would break my heart.
thames water have admitted full liability so fingers crossed everyone will be compensated in some way.
however one must remember to take the positives from the negatives, so here they are:
 1) we now know all our neighbours , who are a lovely bunch indeed!(darren and mark on the itv news):

2) free meal courtesy of thames water

3)some attractive men of many trades loitering around our front door

4)jack is a hero!

nan on tour #3 : SPRMKT sweep

amsterdam. don't you just bloody love a bank holiday? especially when it's a surprise midweek one. i worked till midday on this 'ascension day' (fact learnt the night before at the newly opened gay bar bump http://barbump.nl/ ), then i decided the best way for me to get around was to rent a bike and frolic hand in hand with google maps, up and down and over canals like some kind of hippy on acid (looked more goth on bike. didnt dress for the weather and have winge).

anyway, definite fashion must do/see:

SPRMRKT (rozengracht 191-193, 1016 LZ amsterdam, netherlands +31 20 330 5601)
i have been excited to go here since i heard about it last month. possible siob.she stockist, one may jest. the day i visited, three women were moving the store around for the special arrival of topshop boutique. seems a little left, sorry right field beside their stock of commes des garcons, martin margiela, unconditional and rick owens? fortunately though, i had a long informative chat with one of the ladies who explained that seven years ago when they opened it was just a second hand furniture and clothes shop. now, minus the secondhand clothes, it's somewhat dover street market meets michiko koshino '59' concept store (cant believe that place closed). SPRMRKT made me so prickly with excitement i just wish i had she there to experience it with. or dale winton and his infamous beep beep. on a happy note, one of the three women happened to be the owner, who personally sources all the labels she stocks and is completely approchable (i swear the other lady gave me a knowing smile as she nudged me in her direction).

siob.she at SPRMRKT, amsterdam. let's just watch this space then http://www.sprmrkt.nl/

on another quick note, if you go to amsterdam, please please go out of your way to eat at proef (gosschalklaan 12, 1014 dc amsterdam http://english.proefamsterdam.nl/)  this little ‘city-farm’ serves simple, delicious home-cooked food picnic style, the produce and menu depending on whats in season. just amazing.
